The Big Event

What is The Big Event?

Throughout the years, the community of Laramie has shown endless support to the students of UW. The Big Event’s goal is to reciprocate that appreciation to residents.

Through service-oriented activities, The Big Event promotes campus and community unity as University of Wyoming students come together for one day to express their gratitude for the support from the surrounding community.

The Big Event is an event that strives to uphold the ideals of unity and service. This one-day event is not based on socioeconomic need, but rather a way for the student body to express their gratitude to the entire community which supports the University. It is important to remember The Big Event is not about the number of jobs completed or the number of students who participate each year. Instead, it is the interaction between students, and residents and the unity that results throughout the community that makes The Big Event such a unique project.

The Big Event is an opportunity for UW students to say thank you to residents of the greater Laramie community for the support they provide to college students. Our goal is to make this a BIG EVENT so we can say a BIG THANK YOU. We encourage all students and faculty to participate in The Big Event. Students may sign up as individuals, groups of friends or as organizations (RSOs, ASUW, Greek Life, etc.)   Starting in 2023, volunteers can register in groups of up to 5 people. Group registration closes October 8, 2023.

Are you looking for students to help you with a project around the house? Jobs requests could include raking leaves, cleaning gutters, painting, yard work as well as a variety of other tasks. Student crews will be available to volunteer from roughly 10 a.m. - 1 p.m. on the morning of the event.

Job requests are currently closed. Check back next fall!

The Big Event originated at Texas A&M University in 1982. Already, the largest one-day, student-run service day in the nation, The Big Event has expanded to 95 other schools across the nation and International schools in Spain, Australia, Italy and Germany. The first annual Big Event was held at the University of Wyoming in the fall of 2013 as the kick-off to homecoming week. Over 700 students participated at 90 different locations throughout the Laramie community.
