With no Cowboys scoring short go points and no Cowgirls qualifying for the championship round, both University of Wyoming teams dropped out of the final top 10 standings at the conclusion of the College National Finals Rodeo (CNFR) in Casper.

The Cowboys had one short go qualifier, Bodie Mattson and his team roping partner, Roan Weil, of Casper College, but the pair did not finish their run and had a no time. The pair finished 10th in the final standings among the 12 roping team qualifiers. Mattson finished fourth in the national all-around standings, scoring points in team roping and tie down roping.

Earlier in the week, the Cowboys were sixth in the nation, while the Cowgirls were 10th, but with a tough third round, and no points coming out of the short go, both teams fell in the final standings. The Cowboys ended the season 15th with 315 points. Three Texas schools swept the top three positions: Tarleton State University, in Stephenville, took the national title with 895 points, followed by Clarendon College, in Childress, with 820; and scoring 670 points was Texas A&M University, of College Station.

The Cowgirls were 19th overall with 75 points. West Alabama University, of Livingston, Ala., repeated as women’s champions with 855 points; Tarleton State was second with 605; and third went to Texas A&M at 567.

UW had one nonpoints team member qualify for the short go -- Quincy Reynolds, of Gillette -- but he and partner Trevor Sorge, of Gillette College, missed their steer, dropping them to ninth.

Overall, UW head Coach Seth Glause was proud of his teams, saying they came out and competed hard each round. The highlights were Mattson and Weil recording the top third-round time, with teammate Riata Day, of Fleming, Colo., winning the second round of goat tying.

“I am proud of our students; we’ll be ready to get back to work and get ready to come right back here to compete for a national title,” he says. “I was proud of our teams this year, especially our senior leaders -- they came in here and competed well. The ones who are coming back next year and the incoming student-athletes we’ve recruited; they should be a talented team and should have a good opportunity to compete at a high level. We’ll get them ready to qualify and compete here in Casper next year.”
