Honors SOAR First-Year Badge

What will I learn through Honors SOAR?

Learning Outcome 1: Students will engage in interdisciplinary/multidisciplinary inquiry and critical reflection to enhance your understanding of the complexity of every field of human knowledge and to strengthen your ability to reflect critically about the processes of knowledge formation.

Learning Outcome 2: Students will participate in civic and community engagement to become impactful contributors to various communities, including the Honors College and the University of Wyoming, among others. 

Learning Outcome 3: Students will experience and assess a wide variety of global perspectives to increase their understanding of human connectivity and culture and to understand and bridge different ways of knowing and believing in the world. 

Learning Outcome 4: Students will build skills in project development, leadership, and teamwork to prepare them for their future academic and professional careers. 

What are the requirements?

The First-Year Honors SOAR Badge includes requirements in the following areas: Intellectual and Creative Engagement, Service, and the Capstone Training Module. Please see the descriptions of each required component below. All requirements are completed using the Suitable application.

1. Building Honors Community (10 points)

Through this category, you will engage with events and activities that foster connection with other Honors students, enabling you to build community with diverse individuals while also engaging in a variety of meaningful experiences. Opportunities in this category expand your ability to connect with honors students, faculty, and staff, and to engage with diverse pillars of our honors community. Reflecting on events and activities in this category allows you to develop your understanding of what it means to be an individual honors student who is also part of an honors community.  

Engagement in a minimum of 1 opportunities is required. Event must be designated as a "Building Honors Community" opportunity to fulfill this requirements.

*1 event required (10 pts each)

 

 

2. Intellectual and Creative Engagement (20 points)

Engage with events and initiatives that foster innovative ways of thinking, feeling, responding, acting, solving, and expressing. Opportunities in this category expand your ability to think critically across areas of knowledge and creativity. Reflecting about experiences that are intellectually and creatively simulating helps you appreciate the vital role of intellectual and creative activity, and allows your brain to make meaningful connections for the future.  Engagement in a minimum of 2 separate opportunities is required. 

*2 separate events required (10 pts each)

3. Community Service (30 points)

As an honors student, you will take action by engaging in a minimum of 3 hours of service or philanthropy on campus, in the Laramie community, or in your own community and submit a short reflection of your experience in the SOAR app. If your instructor of Honors Colloquium does not specify a group service project that is required for your section, you may choose an opportunity from the Civic and Community Engagement Category in SOAR, or propose your own unique service project via the SOAR app.

4. Completion of Capstone Training Module (70 points)

First year honors students will successfully complete the Honors Capstone Module via WyoGroups.
