What is Educational Leadership?

Emphasizing courses in leadership issues specific to education such as instructional leadership, curriculum development and community relations, UW’s online educational leadership program will also ground you in practice through an in-depth supervised internship in elementary, middle and high schools.

The UW educational leadership master’s is a practice-forward program that qualifies you for Wyoming principal certification, readying you for building principalship.

Application Deadline

  • February 1 - If applying for following fall semester
  • September 1 - If applying for following spring semester

Admission Requirements

  • Must have a minimum of 3 years teaching experience

Domestic Students

  • GPA: 3.0
  • GRE: no requirement

International Students

  • TOEFL: 550 minimum written or 80 minimum online, OR IELTS: 6.5 minimum overall score
  • GRE: 147 min in each subtest and 4.0 minimum on analytical writing

Whether you are living in Sheridan, Wyoming or Fargo, North Dakota, the online educational leadership master’s degree gives you the knowledge and practical experience necessary to effectively lead programs and schools from kindergarten through high school.

Faculty Practitioners

Study with professors who are professionals in the field. Your teachers have 60 years of combined K-12 leadership experience in states that include Wyoming, Arizona and Nevada.


Complete a 435-hour field experience where you will receive practical school leadership experience and mentoring in elementary, middle and high schools. This makes it possible for you to work at the elementary or secondary level.



Travel Grants

Apply for travel funding to help cover some of the costs involved with attending and presenting at education-related conferences.




Pursue a graduate assistantship. Many departments on campus offer assistantships to full-time students studying on campus in Laramie, Wyoming. These opportunities provide stipends along with faculty research opportunities and college-level teaching experiences.


The UW College of Education is nationally accredited by NCATE. The educational leadership program is accredited by the National Educational Leadership Program Recognition Standards (NELP).

Special Education Director Endorsement

You can gain the Special Education Director endorsement from the Wyoming Professional Teaching Standards Board (PTSB) if you have earned a masters from UW in either educational leadership or special education AND at least a graduate certificate from UW in either educational leadership or special education.
