Explore A Whole New World Under A Microscope

The B.S. in Microbiology at UW introduces students to the many microbes inhabiting this planet. Our program gets you one microscope slide closer to this fascinating, diverse science.

Form relationships with expert faculty who will guide you through hands-on labs and offer mentorship to help you pursue your dream career in microbiology.

What is Microbiology?

Microbiology is a field of study that focuses on the study of microorganisms, including bacteria, viruses, fungi and parasites. Microbiology contributes to our understanding of genetics, diseases and more. UW educates students about basic and applied microbiological sciences throughout our interdepartmental program utilizing a combination of coursework and laboratory experiences. We ask students to examine new problems in the field to prompt growth and curiosity.

Microbiology Program Highlights

Microbiology students at UW have special opportunities to study their specific interests. With great resources and strong connections, you’ll complete our program having benefited from all we have to offer.

Research Opportunities

Numerous departments at UW offer first-hand research experiences with microbes. Our labs are equipped to study everything from Plant and Soil Science to Nutrition and Health.

Smaller Class Sizes

We know that working together helps students learn transferable skills like collaborative problem-solving, which is why UW doesn’t have lecture halls of 400 people. It’s just not our style.

Networking & Student Groups

UW’s Micro & Molecular Biology Club joins students from many majors to learn about different aspects of science. All are welcome to participate in experiments and community service activities.

Financial Support

Brand of Excellence Scholarships are available for students in the College of Agriculture, Life Sciences and Natural Resources. There are many other scholarships and opportunities as well.

It’s an excellent foundation for those students who aspire to become research scientists or who plan to go on for an advanced professional degree in health care. Our program is unique in that it is interdepartmental and consists of participating faculty with a wide variety of expertise.
