Frequently Asked Questions

If you wish to visit us during Winter Break, we do ask that you make an appointment. This is not normally required, but it allows staff time to pull your requested items and any other materials that may assist you in your research. Email us at to schedule an appointment.
Students and employees of UW need a WyoOne ID to use items within the reading room. The items used by patrons from outside the University of Wyoming are checked out differently.
There are more than 90,000 published items primarily related to Wyoming's history and culture, including books, maps, microfilm, newspapers, periodicals, government documents, and ephemera. Our Canoso Collection is unique in that it is not specific to Wyoming, and it contains miniature artists' books.
All Special Collections items must stay in the Chisum Special Collections department. Any items you use will be checked out under your ID, but they must be returned before you leave the room.
To protect our collections, we ask that you do not eat, drink, or use writing tools other than pencils in the reading room. These items, including backpacks and other bags, must be placed in the shelves provided.
We do not have a scanner in the reading room currently. You are welcome to take photos with your cell phone or a staff member may take the requested item and scan it to a flash drive or email address on level 2 at no cost. If you need more than 20 pages scanned, please work with the Interlibrary Loan department to fulfill this request.
