UW License Plates

The History

In November 2007, the Alumni Association began accepting applications for the first cycle of the University of Wyoming license plates. The brown plate was approved during the 2007 Legislative Session in Wyoming – the result of much advocacy work by UWAA supporters. The first cycle plate issue was approved through 2016. In 2017, a new 8-year cycle began and gold plates are now being issued.

Any vehicle or motorcycle registered in Wyoming is eligible to receive the UW plate. $130 is required with the plate application. Of this fee, $100 is deposited into an UW account that is restricted for student scholarships and programming expenditures. $30 goes back to the Wyoming Department of Transportation. Not only do the plates look great on vehicles, but they are a great way to support UW students. The $130 plate fee is not tax deductible.

An online system is available for new orders of the 2018 gold series plates or you can order and pay by check through this application PDF.

The results of this program are truly outstanding. Since its inception, the program has issued 13,691 plates throughout the state and generated $1,369,000 for student scholarships and programming. Contact the Alumni Association if you have questions about your vehicle’s eligibility for the UW plate or the availability of certain plate numbers.

*The number of plates sold and money generated is as of 3/8/2021.

2022 License Plate Scholarship Recipient

Zephaniah Driz

I would like to thank you, the donors of the License Plate Funded Scholarship, for awarding this scholarship to me. I truly and deeply appreciate the opportunity you are giving me through this scholarship. With this scholarship, you have helped me reach one of my biggest life goals: attending college! You have given me the opportunity to be able to attend university and that is something that I will carry with me for the rest of my life.

I know that without your help, my journey throughout my college career would definitely be much different. I also know that the License Plate Funded Scholarship will aid me in my ability  to afford attending the University of Wyoming, and for that I am immensely grateful. The scholarship you have awarded me with has given me the inspiration and drive to strive for and achieve all that I can in the best ways possible.

Ever since I was born, I have lived a military lifestyle. For the last 12 years I have lived  overseas growing up around military folk my dad has worked with. I also grew up around a civil engineering environment since my dad worked in the CE field. Being able to grow up around this lifestyle had inspired me to choose civil engineering as my major, and even to participate in AFROTC so that I can join the military as well. Ever since I can remember, I’ve always been fascinated with the engineering aspect of things. From watching “How It’s Made” to tinkering with every little thing, my mind and hands have always been at work. But as I matured, I also realized that being in the military is one of my goals too. As for after the military, I can only hope to become a teacher and share some of my most important values and knowledge with others.
